Southern Briez up for national gong

Apostle Whey Cheese Southern Briez finalist at 2019 Australian Grand Dairy Awards

Apostle Whey Cheese will contest for national cheese honours after its popular Southern Briez was selected as a finalist for the 2019 Australian Grand Dairy Awards.

It’s not only the judges who get to laud the Cooriemungle-made Brie though – with the wider community also urged to vote for Southern Briez in the People’s Choice Awards.

The creamy and rich brie has long been a best seller at the Apostle Whey Cheese shop and has already won a number of awards across Australia.

Owner Julian Benson said the business had evolved to include fresh bottled milk and gelato in recent years, but it was nice when its original cheeses continued to be recognised.

“Entering awards is a really good way for us to benchmark ourselves against others and also to acknowledge the work of our cheese makers and staff,” he said.

“As I’ve said before, the biggest key to our cheese making success is the way our son Luke manages and cares for the herd. His ability to produce high-grade milk means we can make the quality of cheeses that we do.”

Julian said the 2019 Australian Grand Dairy Awards would be held on Thursday, January 31 and were a terrific opportunity to celebrate quality and excellence in the dairy industry.

“During the judging, our Sothern Briez went before two panels of 12 trained judges, including technical experts, food experts, retailers, cheesemongers and chefs,” he said.

“They reduced more than 400 gold medal award winners across Australia to just 57 finalists – three in each category.

“To be in the top three in the White Mould Cheese category is already a tremendous honour. Hopefully, we can take that extra step and bring the award home.”

Julian said award organisers Dairy Australia had also launched the online voting for the 2019 People’s Choice Awards.

He urged everyone who has enjoyed Southern Briez to vote for the cheese and help spread the word for others to do the same.

To vote in the awards, please visit peopleschoiceaward.legendairy.com.au and follow the link to the ‘white mould’ section. One lucky voter will enjoy a year’s supply of award-winning cheeses.
